West Secord: A New Playground in Secord
Let the fundraising begin!
Playgrounds are at the heart of a healthy community. A place for kids to play, adults to congregate and sports teams to flex their muscles. They form the common ground for lasting community relationships. And thanks to the vibrant and resourceful Secord community league, plans for a new playground are well underway.
Where Will the New Secord Playground Be?
This new west Edmonton playground will be beside David Thomas King School.
What will the Secord playground Look Like?
The playground has passed the concept phase and is now in the design phase with the City of Edmonton.
- Pump track for mountain biking
- Basketball court
- Playground pods
- Bike racks
Who Pays for the Playground?
It’s a team effort spearheaded by the Secord community league playground committee. Playground committee chair Christie Delano is hard at work guiding fundraising activities in partnership with the City of Edmonton, David Thomas King School parent council, and corporate sponsors. It’s a team effort.
How Much Money is Needed?
“Our estimated cost is about $810 thousand,” explains Delano. “It’s challenging for us because our community league is so young that we don’t yet qualify for casino fundraising. This is why we really need private donations from Secord residents.”
“For phase 1, we need $140 thousand from the community — then a total of $310,044 to cover the remaining costs [of the additional phases].”
When Will Playground Construction Start?
Estimated start of summer 2019.
